backlog

Facebook is always updated first due to the simplicity of it. Sorry, blog. Some of these photos were taken with a mobile device in not-so-good light, so they are not-so-good.

chalkboard donkey

I had intended to draw a rabbit on the chalkboard on Tuesday, but in light of the election results decided on something a little different.

in case you were wondering..

..this is what an owl factory looks like:

Did I mention that I was chosen to be one of ~150 vendors at this year's Bazaar Bizarre Holiday Show?

There will be owls galore, plus original paintings, drawings and high-quality prints of original work.

playing catch up

Lots of things going on! Busy with my rent-paying jobs, and have a few commissions to work on to boot.

24 owls in aquas and browns (commission):

A pigeon that has been languishing (personal):

And the ghost of a peregrine falcon, also languishing (work trade):

Owls are to be finished first, and then I have a plushy commission to work on (design not yet finalized or I'd share). Plus a painting commission, on hold but in the wings. Whew!

mixed media piece

This was a gift to a new-mom friend of mine back home (East coast).
5"x5". Collage and colored pencil on canvas. Sides are painted with acrylic.

The photos aren't that great, but good enough:

oh hey

another found wood painting. this piece was scavenged a few years ago (with permission) from the Golden Gate Bridge wood shop. the background color is the actual "International Orange" paint used on the Bridge.

the line on the left is an indentation in the wood.

squid prints

I did these back in April, when I volunteered at the SFCB Earth Day open house. Didn't get around to posting about it due to computer issues.. so here they are.

These prints were made from a humboldt squid that was donated by the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. This is a smaller squid; the mantle is about 16" long (they can grow to almost 6 feet in mantle length!). Water based block printing ink was applied to the skin of the squid, and then the paper was laid over the top and smoothed down.

dragon mural update

The client decided on the top sketch, and painting started on the 24th of April. It has progressed much faster than I thought it would. There are only a couple more hours of work left in him.

a black bird

Grackle, blackbird, crow, starling. I used grackles as references but for those who aren't so familiar with birds, he could be any of the many black ones that are always poking around. Acrylic, 11"x14".

Like the barn owl in my previous post, he is on found wood. There are several more in the works, as well as some woodcuts.

another letterpress class

This was a full day class incorporating text, block, and multiple color registration on the Vandercook press.

The print is collaborative, with each student carving their own blocks under instruction. Mine is the center block.

the first color. it's a blend roll
blocks inked up with the second color
there were 4 paper colors
discussing and trouble-shooting registration issues
the last one got printed upside-down. kind of neat effect.
not shown: print on  pumpkin colored paper
without the blend roll
my block.
i was naughty and didn't clean it off, but i'm not going to be printing it again, and it looks so nice with the blue

quiet, but not idle

Updates here and at my flea market blog have been few and far between but I've been keeping busy.

First order of business: garden mural commission. The client saw this pastel drawing and contacted me.

Waiting to hear yea or nay on these sketches:

oh, decisions

I needed some business cards for this past Tuesday but my supreme indecisiveness resulted in running out of time to order any. So I made some. The "edition" of 24 came out so-so (in my opinion).

This may become a thing.

oldies but goodies

These lithographs were made in 2006. Both were small editions of 7 plus one Artist Proof of each.
They are for sale in my Etsy shop.
